Me Made March - March 31

Yay! It's the last day in March. I am a little surprised at how easy Me Made March was. I did have some repeat days but this red and blue striped shirt is the only thing I wore more than twice. This skirt is also made by me. I don't wear it much because it is a little big and therefore fits funny. The zipper was also one of my first zippers and I don't love the way it puckers at the bottom. No, I don't want to show you my zipper puckers.
Before making sure the skirt fit I did all the top stitching. It would be a beast to go back and take it out to resize it. So I made this belt with the hope that it would bring the waist in a little. It does and I really like the red buttons. It is a comfortable skirt though, so it has that going for it.

I am so glad I did Me Made March. I have learned a lot about what I need in my closet. I could use a few more day dresses. The maxi dress is awesome and I could use another. I should probably make another pair of pants or shorts since the ones I made turned out so well and pants are always good. I may make a navy cardigan since the one I have gets worn so much it has holes. I have been looking for one at the thrift store (in any size since I can alter it) and can't seem to find any. I guess they are something people hold on to. I've learned that I can make clothes that look store bought and that I like as much, if not more than store bought. The above skirt is not a good example here.

Here is what I wore this month:

Me Made March - March 30

What a drab day. Last night Calder spent from 2:00 to 5:00 just hanging out in our bed. He talked, he kicked, he sang songs. We desperately tried to sleep through it all. It didn't work. Jason slept on Calder's bed, I threatened to sleep on the couch. It wasn't pretty. So I was tired, it rained and we didn't really do much today. But we looked cute doing not much.

Me Made March is drawing to a close. I have really loved it and I enjoy putting a little more effort into my outfits each day. I love wearing the things I've made and working them in to my every day. What about you? Do you like my fake 'fashion blogging?' Do want to continue seeing what I wear? Please tell me what you think!

Me Made March - March 29

Every year I have a similar cycle. In February I get a little bummed because it is the end of the Winter, I'm ready for Spring and it's just cold. Then March hits and it starts to get a little warmer. I spend more time outside and I start having the urge to purge my stuff and spruce up my apartment. So, we took three bags of stuff to the thrift store today and I re-arranged some things. I also did a bit of deep cleaning and feel much better.

I have a few projects in the works and can't wait to show you! I don't know that I'm done purging yet, but I feel better for now.

Oh and if you want me to make something just for you, check back on yesterday's post. There are still a few spots left for me to mail you something amazing!

Me Made March - March 28

I think I am going to call Chicago my last city guide city for now. I hope you enjoyed it! I do currently live in the DC area but I want to wait before doing a city guide. I have more exploring to do, you know? But I promise as awesome places pop up, I'll let you know about them! So, did you like the city guide? Do you now have a strong desire to visit any of these cities?

I also found this on the very creative blog Scarlet. So, since I will be getting something delightful from her, I need to pass this on and five of you will be receiving something pretty cool from me. Just make sure you are one of the first five people to comment and then zip me an email at cowilcox (at) gmail (dot) com.

And, here's what I wore today. I found this cardigan from Anthropologie and love it. So I thought I would attempt to duplicate it. I had some blue and white striped knit, so that is what I used. I'm totally loving it. And, dare I say, I like mine better?

I do wish the sleeves would have been striped too but I ran out of fabric. All well. I still love it. I used  a t-shirt as a pattern and extended the front area. It is very similar to the blue one I wore a few days ago. The only difference is I added a little extra around the neck. If it wasn't pinned up it would drape like the Anthropologie one.

Oh and the coolest thing about this new cardigan is that EVERYTHING I used to make it came from the thrift store. The fabric, the yellow bias tape, even the 1950's buttons.

Me Made March - March 27

I seem to be obsessed with nautical things these days. As I was surfing Etsy while talking to my sister on the phone (I know you do it too) I found this adorable necklace.
Wouldn't it look great with the outfit I wore today? Oh, who am I kidding, wouldn't it look great with 75% of the outfits I wear? I just love the clean, crisp look. It doesn't hurt that nautical generally consists of stripes and I LOVE stripes.

This is the dress I designed for the Shabby Apple contest. I adore this dress and need to make another one. It fits like a glove and is the perfect length. I normally don't wear the cardigan with it, but it was cold today and I refuse to get my coat out.

Chicago City Guide - Shop

Shopping in Chicago is great. You can find any store you're looking for within an hour or two. There's even two Ikeas. If you liked the outdoor shopping mall experience in San Diego, you can also find that here in the Old Orchard Shopping Center. Although, it doesn't hold the same charm in the winter. It also reminds me of Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio.

If you're looking for the best of the best head to the Magnificent Mile. It has all the shopping you could want. There are three or four malls full of stores and plenty more along the street. They range from Filene's Basement to Hermes.

I didn't do a lot of second hand shopping in Chicago and wish that I would have. I did, however, love the way people just put stuff out on the street when they didn't want it. I really miss seeing all the awesome stuff in alleys or in front of people's apartments. I found some good treasures that way and got rid of a lot of junk.

You should also stop by The Needle Shop. Not only is it a great fabric store, it is also a sewing school! Oh and they are also getting into the fabric production business. The first line they are doing is called Outside Oslo by designer Jessica Jones. Outside Oslo should be available in May.

I hope you've enjoyed our tour of Chicago. I love this city and plan to go back to visit soon. Hopefully, you can get there too!

Me Made March - March 26

What a crazy day. I started out thinking we would stay home and decompress after our week of running around DC but a bunch of errands popped up and away we went. The weather is getting cold again and I'm pulling out my thickest wool scarf. I refuse to get out my coat, so this is the outfit for the day. I found this fabric at JoAnn's a long time ago. It is 100% wool and I love the tiny black / brown houndstooth. I frayed the edges and sewed around to stop the fraying.
I thought it would be fun to tie it like a tie today. Yep, I know how to tie a tie. My sweet husband and I learned together when I was 16 and he was 17. How romantic huh?
I love this massive mix of neutrals; gray, brown, black. Who says you can't mix them? See that blue t-shirt peeking out from under my sweater. I actually cut the bottom off of a t-shirt I didn't like much and sewed it on to the bottom of my black sweater. You can't see the seam and I love that it extends the length of my sweater. That is such an easy fix!
My two year old is back behind the camera and better than ever. He told me how to stand for the photo below. Although it is blurry, I love it.

Me Made March - March 25

Today is the day my family went home. I miss them already and I'm sure you'll miss their far superior photography skills. My brother and mom have both taken some of the better pictures I've had over the last week. Today's pictures are from my 16 year old brother. I think he is quite talented.
We spent a cold morning at Arlington Cemetery and then went to the building museum for lunch and an afternoon play. This is Calder's favorite museum because it has the best play room for kids. We go there all the time. It doesn't hurt that it is across the street from the Judiciary Square metro stop. So these are indoor pictures but the building has a lot of windows.
And this best represents the real colors of the outfit.

Chicago City Guide - Eat

from Giordan's

Chicago is known for their hot dogs and pizza. When it comes to pizza, just like baseball teams people have pretty strong alliances. After trying a few different options my husband and I decided our favorite was Giordano's.  I love the butter flavor in the crust and the way the sauce is slightly sweet. Also, I've never done it but you can also order them online.

from chicagocityguide

Sweet Mandy B's serves the best cupcakes I've ever eaten. And I've eaten a lot of cupcakes in my life and I'm not kidding, these are the best! The cake is perfectly moist and the frosting is sweet and plentiful. The frosting is my favorite part. My favorite flavors are red velvet, orange creamsicle and simple buttercream. I also love the shop. It is cheerful and fun and has a vintage soda shop vibe.

Chicago is known for their hot dogs and Hot Doug's is my favorite place to get one. They are cheap, extremely tasty and fun. The hand cut fries are amazing. If you have a hankering for hot dogs, go here.

from Sushi Wabi
I had my first taste of sushi in Chicago. I fell in love! I have eaten at probably a dozen sushi restaurants since and Sushi Wabi serves the most beautiful sushi I've ever seen. The taste is incomparable as well. I think this may be because this is the first place I ever ate sushi but my husband and friends agree that it is delicious.

If you're looking for some good old fashioned American food, go to Bandera. The food is superb, but a little pricey. I don't think you'll regret it though. The cornbread is amazing. The pork chops and steak are great. Heck, even the salad is memorable. I just realized Bandera is a chain. That's great, you don't even have to go to Chicago to find it!

Chicago is definitely one city you shouldn't go hungry in. There is so much good food! Enjoy every bit of it.

Me Made March - March 24

I have wanted gray nail polish for a few months now but since I'm not buying anything new this year it went on the list of things to buy in 2012. My parents are here visiting and we went shopping yesterday. My mom found gray nail polish and she knew I wanted some and she bought it! I am on cloud nine. Seriously. I love this nail polish and am so thrilled my mom keeps track of things like that. Thanks mom!
Today we went antiquing. It was fun and I found a bunch of vintage spools of thread for pretty cheap. I'm excited to do something cool with them.

Me Made March - March 23

Happy Wednesday! The maxi dress is back and I love it just the same. We had a pretty busy day. I dropped my parents of to listen to oral arguments at the Supreme Court and took my brother and Calder to a shopping mall. We walked around and window shopped. My brother didn't have any money and I'm not buying anything new. Believe it or not we didn't buy anything. We sure got a good walk though. And this dress can go the distance.

I have heard that maxi dresses aren't very mom friendly and I totally disagree. This dress is just as comfortable as jeans. I'm planning to make another one soon.

Me Made March - March 22

Please excuse these terrible pictures. I totally spaced it today and didn't take any pictures until a few minutes ago. We had a busy day with a Supreme Court tour and grocery shopping. I love this shirt a lot and will probably make a few that are very similar to it in the future.
Here's a close up of the top. I made a seam down the middle of the front so I could make two longer tails to tie together into a knot in the middle. I love the added texture and interest it adds. It's really hard to get a decent picture at night. Sorry.

Chicago City Guide - Play

If you do a 30 second google search you'll find a million things to do in Chicago. I'll tell you a little about my favorites. This doesn't mean other things on the list aren't good. They are, I just can't list everything, you know?

Sporting Events: While living in Chicago we went to games of six of the seven national sports teams housed in Chicago. The only one we didn't get to was the Chicago Fire (soccer). We loved them all and would have loved to see a Fire game but it didn't work out. My favorites are the Blackhawks, the White Sox and the Cubs. It's weird to live in Chicago and like both the White Sox and the Cubs but since I wasn't born there I feel I can get away with it. If you get lucky enough to have tickets to the Cubs you are in for a great experience. It is definitely a party in the stands. I think people go as much to party and see friends as much as see baseball. The White Sox tickets can be pretty cheap, which makes it great for a family event.

The Beach: Chicago has beautiful beaches. North Avenue Beach is generally overcrowded but fun.  Parking is non-existent. The southside beaches are just as beautiful and sunny but less crowded. I love The Point which has it all. You can have a picnic in the grass, barbecue in the pits they have, play on the beach or join an ultimate Frisbee or soccer game. Parking is free.
From Hotelchatter.com

Magnificent Mile: If shopping is your favorite vacation activity, this is the place to be. Check out the official website and prepare to drool. They have it all.

Chicago River Architectural Tour: We did this tour three time and would still jump at the chance to do it again. Each time was with a different company and each of them were great! This is a must do. Check out this site or this site or this site to book a tour.

Millennium Park: This is definitely one of the most beautiful parks I've ever seen. The grass is green and plentiful, there's tons of things to do and great food close by. I love the amphitheater where they have concerts in the summer. They have fountains to play in when it's hot, ice skating when it's cold and the bean all year round.
From Chicagonow

Summer festivals and events: All summer they have awesome things downtown. There's the Taste of Chicago, Blues Fest, Jazz Fest, and the Air and Water Show.

I guarantee you won't be bored in Chicago, just try to plan your trip in the summer. It is definitely the best Chicago season.

Me Made March - March 21

I have been hoping for a rainy day so I could wear my new rain coat. I LOVE this coat. It is so fun and I adore the piping. Actually I adore all piping. As annoying as it can be to sew, it is so worth it. I used Simplicity 2508, which doesn't call for piping so I just added it to each seam I wanted to pipe. This coat was a lot of work but so worth it!
We went to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Air and Space Museum and the Native American museum today, so we were outside a lot and I appreciated having my rain coat. I used the yellow lining fabric to create the piping, so it matches perfectly. The lining (and piping) is an almost neon yellow. I think I might add a belt. We'll see.

City Guide - Chicago

I feel like Chicago is the place I became a wife, a mother and an adult. Although I went to college in Portland, as soon as I graduated and got married (one week apart) I moved to Chicago. I lived there for five years and loved every summer of it. I'll be honest, the winters are terrible but the summer almost makes up for it.

Chicago is located on the edge of Lake Michigan. It has some beautiful beaches, amazing shopping, a gorgeous skyline and some of the best food I've ever tasted. It is definitely a vacation worthy city.

My heart will always have a very special place for Chicago. I am excited to tell you all about my favorites this week!
